As a proposal for an annual idea competition that seeks architectural solutions to revitalize urban and public areas in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, the project is conceived as a process of layering diverse intensities of activities and their relationships to the city. Each layer focuses on performing a complimentary role to the other while leaving the central span of the bridge to socio - cultural forces within the city of Cleveland to invade and activate the space.
ACCESS POINTS AND BIKE LINE
As a primary objective the design seeks to create a continuous line that connects the 2 levels of the bridge and the city below through pedestrians and bike ways. The horizontal circulation of bikeways, ramps and pedestrian pathways are arranged along the structural bays of the bridge - weaving in and out at certain points, distinguished by colour & urban iconography.
GREEN LAYER (OASIS)
To counter the vast expanse on either side of the bridge, plantation of various densities are arranged on the intermediate level to create a warmer landscape suspended above the river. The banks of the river would also be treated by vegetation to offer a correspondence between the ground and the bridge.
ORGANIZE AND ACTIVATE
To activate the bridge as an alternate series of spaces between the 2 parts of the city, the functions are contained within a flexible system of boxes mounted to a steel structure that can easily be dismantled.
-Enclosed spaces (east/west pools): technical boxes that can be used for specific activities i.e. recording studios, projections, special storage etc.
-East + West Concourse: Movable boxes are used to create partially enclosed spaces that can host workshops, exhibitions etc. to the west and a local produce market to the east.
-Central span: this space is kept clear to allow for special events.
LINK TO THE UPPER LEVEL
As a final layer of modulations the three levels are connected via perforations, elevators and ramps that offer visual cues of the lower levels andprovides more natural light to the new spaces below.
